Leaving a Legacy

Leaving a Legacy

This past weekend we were in Texas for the wedding of my husband’s niece. Several family members and friends came to Austin for the celebration to include both of our children. It was great “seeing in person” so many individuals we have come to know over the years.

What is amazing to me is that my husband and I are now considered as the “older members of the family.” It doesn’t seem possible and yet that is the season of life we find ourselves in.

Whether we feel like it or not, we are all getting older. All of us have to choose how we are going to live our life; will we dread getting older or embrace the adventure that comes with each new season of our life. Whether young or not so young, we all have the potential to enjoy a blessed life. We have that hope that we will even in old age still produce fruit; and remain vital and green (see Psalm 92:14 NLT).

We are not doomed when we reach our fifties, sixties, seventies, eighties, or beyond. That is the world’s perspective on aging, but that is not God’s. He often brings about a dynamic shift in the latter portions of our lives if we are willing to take God at His word.

Chuck Swindoll on his Insight for Living radio show talked about a survey of eighty-five-year-old people as they entered the twilight of life. They were asked what they regretted most about the way they had lived.

The seniors said:

  • I would have spent more time reflecting in meditation and contemplation.

  • I would have risked more.

  • I would have done more things that would live on after I die.

I may have a little time yet before I reach my twilight years, but I do know that when I do reach that season of my life, I don’t want to have any regrets. I want to embrace each season, living wisely and make the most of every opportunity (See Colossians 4:5 NLT).

Each day of life God gives us is an opportunity to grow in wisdom, dignity and character (See Proverbs 20:29 TPT). I want the greatest legacy I leave with others to live out an authentic, real and relevant faith in front of my family, friends and community.

Whatever your age, remember we’re all aspiring models. We have the potential to reflect Christ’s life, love, and joy to spread hope and inspiration to those around us. This holiday season, let’s give a gift that keeps on giving for years to come.

Merry Christmas,

Cindy
