Prayer Walk Focus and Guidelines

“…The heartfelt and persistent prayer of a righteous man (believer) can accomplish much [when put into action and made effective by God—it is dynamic and can have tremendous power].”

James 5:16 AMP

A prayer walk is a powerful way to draw near to Jesus as you walk your neighborhood and community.

A prayer walk is a way to engage God in heartfelt and earnest prayer on behalf of others.

What is a prayer walk?

A prayer walk is a form of intercessory prayer. You are praying for the needs of others around you even if you don’t know them or know their needs.

It is a silent, deliberate walk around your neighborhood and community.

It is possessing the territory for God (see Deuteronomy 11:24)

It is a way to bless others around you by covering them in prayer.

It will also bring you a greater awareness of those in your neighborhood and those in need.

It is covering in prayer each house, each individual who resides there.

It is allowing the Holy Spirit to reveal the prayer focus and needs.

It is having a scripture to stand on for your neighbors and community.

It is not calling attention to your prayer walk.

Examples of how to prayer as you walk:

Pray that the members of each household may know Christ and may come to trust and rely on His guidance for their lives.

Pray for health and safety over your neighborhood and community.

Pray for the marriages.

Pray for God’s love and healing touch to reach each individual.

Pray for God’s blessings and protection over each room in each home.

Pray for the addictions, hurts, hang-ups, and habits.

If you see a bench in the front yard, patio furniture in the back yard, pray for those who will sit upon it.

If you see a ‘for sale’ sign in the yard, pray for a smooth transition and move for the family and the new neighbors who will move in.

If you see signs of children in the house, pray for those children to grow up knowing God. Pray for the parents to have wisdom and patience in their job of parenting.

If you see signs of teenagers in the house, pray for safety as those kids begin to stretch their wings. Pray they will find a sure path and stay well-grounded as they grow and leave the house.

If you see vehicles, pray for the safety of the drivers and passengers.

Pray over the businesses in your community. Pray over the business owners that operate in wisdom and discernment for good decisions in managing their business.

Pray over the schools in your community.

Pray over the teachers, administrators, and children.

Pray over the hospitals and rest home facilities.

Pray for the staff and residents.

Pray for the churches in your community.

Pray for God to speak into their hearts of the leaders and their members.

If someone asks what you’re doing, explain that you’re praying over the neighborhood. Then ask how you can pray for them.

You can do a virtual prayer walk without leaving your home

Pray using Google Maps by opening Google maps on your computer or smartphone to your neighborhood location and virtually walk the streets. Stop at each house or building and pray for the people there.

Whatever method you choose, let’s join our voices in prayer and ask God to fill the dark corners of our neighborhood and community with His light.

Let’s band together as prayerful, faithful people battling the forces evil with prayer.

Let’s prayerfully ask God to lead us as intercede on behalf of others.

“Pray all the time. Ask God for anything in line with the Holy Spirit’s wishes. Plead with him, reminding him of your needs, and keep praying earnestly for all Christians everywhere.”—Ephesians 6:18 TLB
