God wants our best

The Call to Excellence in Our Work

The simple truth is this: God asks for our best work—not what our culture has come to define as the best “Christian version” of our work. In a world where mediocrity can often be the norm, it's essential for Christians to redefine excellence in their professional and personal endeavors.

Christianity should be synonymous with excellence for two reasons. First and foremost, we reflect the image of a perfect (not merely excellent) God. This means that striving for excellence in our work is not just a task; it’s a privilege. When we commit ourselves to doing our best, we honor the Creator who imbued us with talents and abilities. Our work becomes an expression of gratitude for the gifts we've received.

Secondly, our perfect God can use our work as a vessel to share His love with an unbelieving world. When people interact with us, whether through our services or our products, they may notice something different—something that sets us apart. It is in these moments that we have the incredible opportunity to point them to God. Excellence in our work can serve as a silent testimony to our faith and values.

Colossians 3:23-24 reminds us, “Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ.” This passage emphasizes that our motivation should be God-centered; we work not merely to please others but to glorify Him.

It's vital to understand the meaning of “heartily.” It suggests completing tasks thoroughly, fully, and with enthusiasm. This approach transforms our work from a mundane obligation into a joyful expression of our faith.

In essence, we’re not doing great work to receive glory. Instead, we work hard because there is great joy in giving our best to the God who has already given His best on our behalf. By embracing this mindset, we can influence our workplaces and communities, reflecting God's love and excellence in everything we do. Let us commit to striving for excellence, not just in the eyes of the world but as a true reflection of our faith.
