Technology has opened the doors to a world of information that we once had to travel to obtain. While sometimes it can be daunting—or even frustrating—to learn how to navigate a new computer, tablet or smartphone, there are many benefits to having access to the outside world at your fingertips.

Seniors in retirement often have extra time to fill. Many get a second wind for hobbies that they have always wanted to develop, skills they know they need to learn or are simply ready to make more time for learning more about activities they already love. If you’re a senior who wants to develop a new skill through technology, here are just a few ideas for online courses you can take for personal enrichment in your golden years.

Basic Computer Skills

For seniors, strengthening your general computer skills and developing a basic understanding of how to use the internet not only helps you access information, but also helps you keep in touch with family and friends. Not only will you learn about email, how to share files and how to set up accounts on social media, but you’ll also have access to reading breaking news, listening to your favorite musicians, watching videos and playing games that can keep your mind sharp.

Sometimes seniors reject technology because they fear the unknown, but starting out by learning basic computer skills will give you the confidence you need to explore the world wide web. It’s also important to use guides and tutorials to learn ways to stay safe while online.

Online Music Classes

You’ve always wanted to play the piano, but never had time to sit down with a teacher and learn. Maybe you’ve seen other seniors laughing as they learn fun and exciting instruments like the clarinet or saxophone. While you may want to get out of the house for lessons, if you have limited time or mobility, or have a transportation conflict, you can take all kinds of music lessons online—sometimes even for free. Using your computer skills to navigate the web will not only help you take lessons, but it will also help you explore the tools and equipment you need.

Online Art Classes

Have you dabbled in watercolor or oil painting in the past, but now in your golden years want to learn special techniques? Not only will art classes help improve mood by tapping into your natural creativity, studies have shown that art can help distract you from thoughts of illness, reduce negative emotions and help combat the degradation of fine motor skills that can come with arthritis. Art is a wonderful way to express your emotions, instead of keeping them bottled up. Seniors can use their internet skills to bolster their art abilities or learn a few new ones with online art classes.

Online Conversation Classes

You lived a full life—from raising a family to climbing the career ladder—but now retirement has you feeling a little lonely. The usual bustle of your day, chatting with coworkers or sitting down with your kids for dinner, has been replaced by longer bouts of solitude. Don’t let yourself get isolated in retirement. There are plenty of options for a vibrant senior social life out there. Community centers, fitness centers, church groups and websites like Meetup.com can fill your social calendar with more activities that you could have imagined. However, if you find yourself clamming up when it comes to small talk, look no further than the internet to help. Online conversation classes will help you connect with others in the digital and physical world. You can even learn a new language!

Many people, regardless of age, find new technology intimidating, but taking that first step into the unknown is a lot easier than it looks. If you’re still unsure of where to start, seniors can often take advantage of classes at their local libraries and community colleges. Make the most of your golden years by diving into the internet to keep your mind fresh and active.

What comes out of you in the fire?

My husband and I are knee-deep in a project has taken us months of planning, saving and now building- we are making a mobile camper wagon made entirely by hand- reminiscent of the western wheeled wagons from the 1800’s-1900’s. (You can see the project here: www.nomadearth.design)

Because of my husband’s Japanese heritage, he wanted to put some of his culture into the build. So we started researching the ancient art of Japanese woodburning- Shou Sugi Ban.

It not only creates beautiful and unique designs into the wood as it’s being scorched with a torch of fire over a specific period of time- but it’s also a natural way to prevent pest, rot, and weather damage.

As the flame of over 1,000 degrees was going over these giant pieces of wood, A beautiful image started to come out of the process- patterns, colors and textures started to bubble through.

As we completed every piece, we started noticing that there was no two designs a like. Each piece’s patterns rose from the surface and different waves and textures.

As I was torching a particular section- the Holy Spirit spoke to me very clearly about a verse in 1 Peter:

“May the thought of this cause you to jump for joy, even though lately you’ve had to put up with the grief of many trials. But these only reveal the sterling core of your faith, which is far more valuable than gold that perishes, for even gold is refined by fire. Your authentic faith will result in even more praise, glory, and honor when Jesus the Anointed One is revealed.

‭‭1 Peter‬ ‭1:5-9‬ ‭

It’s 2020 has taught us anything, is that fires and trials will come. It’s about what characteristics and attitudes will come out of the fire the end of the process that matters.

How was God refining you this year and making you into something unique and beautiful?

What is God burning off of you this year so that you can walk into the next year refined, complete and beautiful?

Look Inward To Live Life To The Fullest

What do you do on a daily basis with living a full life? If you're struggling to think of anything, that's okay, you're not alone. Here's the thing – you aren't going to enjoy every minute of every day, things will happen – whether it's a car accident, a fall, illness, financial struggles or the loss of a loved one.

If you're trying to determine what it is that you really want from your life and what will help you live a full life, then ask yourself these questions and rely on your intuition to understand what you're trying to tell yourself.

1. What Does Your Heart Want Right Now?

Empty your feelings onto a sheet of paper and review it later. It might not make a whole lot of sense initially, it's essentially free writing to direct you. It isn't about doing something because your brain is telling you to, it's about relying on your intuition to lead you.

2. What Are You Feeling Right Now?

Follow your intuition and sense where you are being led. Emotions aren't always wise, but your intuition is, so listen to your gut. This will help you filter out some of what you have written as you've let yourself flow onto the paper.

3. What If It's Different Than I Imagined?

Nothing is ever as you expect it to be. If you are truly following your purpose it won't matter whether it unfolds as you imagined, there's a good chance that it will be even better. It's important to remember, though, that even when chasing your dreams there will be bumps along the way. Life can never be perfect, but there is something about life's imperfections that make it worth living.

What Limits You

We all feel held back by assumptions and expectations at various points in our lives. We are comfortable in our easy chair and living on Contentment Lane that we have created for ourselves, at least, that's what we tell ourselves. In truth, we've allowed ourselves to become trapped in a box with a trap lid. What assumptions could be limiting you from making progress in life?

• I can't earn less than X to live a happy life

• I'm too old for this

• I'm not good enough

• I don't have what it takes

• I don't have the necessary skills

• I don't have anything to offer

• I'm too tired

There's nothing special about me

The key to living a full life is finding out what really matters to you, determining what you want, and going after it full force. You get what you work for not what you wish for.

Here are a couple of scriptures to encourage you:

Proverbs 21:21. Prioritizing your spiritual growth will help you to flourish.

Isaiah 46:4.  God is always there to support you.

Matthew 6:25.  This verse reminds you not to sweat the small stuff.God will take care of you.
