This weekend my daughter and all her family came up for the last visit before baby Noah arrives the first week in May.

It was fun getting to hang with the grandchildren and share precious moments together.

Alyvia, the oldest of all four grandkids, is five and had given her life to Christ. The change is so amazing. She is becoming a servant, operating in the God-kind of love to others. What I love is the repentant heart, both humble and contrite.

My daughter mentioned that leading up to their visit, Alyvia had gone to her parent’s room, during the night to confess her misdeeds. This weekend she apologized to her Grandpa, my husband Pat, and to me, separately, for actions she had committed at our home, like taking gum without first asking, not sharing with her cousin, or not being kind to our cat, Sammy.

Finally on Saturday afternoon, the Spirit of the Lord rose up and had me tell Alyvia, that God was pleased with her contrite heart, clearing out the old “baggage.” Then He had me share with her, “old things are passed away and behold ALL THINGS are new.” He wanted her to plant seeds of His Word in her heart, and allow His promises to become her legacy from this day forward.

Yesterday my husband, Pat, and I attended the 3rd annual Naval Academy Crew Alumni Reunion and Spring Kickoff Banquet. Pat loved getting to meet his former coaches and teammates and the added treat was getting to meet a number of current crew members. I heard throughout the evening that being on the crew team was the highlight of their time at the Naval Academy. The community they shared and the friendships that developed has and will carry them throughout the many long years after graduation.

As a believer, we are part of a community of believers and while on this earth, we are working together to fulfill God’s great commission. Building community shouldn’t be a given. It needs to be cultivated and pursued just as a team works together to stay in sync with the captain and coach. We need work together in unity and staying in sync with the Holy Spirit’s guidance and the game plan provided by the Word of God.

What is Community? The short answer is that the word “community” is a compound word: “com” means with and “unity” means being unified or having a common union. God wants believers to dwell in unity. The Bible says how good and pleasant it is when we dwell together in unity. (See Psalm 133:1)

Just as a team works together and shares the same purpose, we as believers need to follow our game plan found in Philippians 2:2-5:

Agree wholeheartedly with each other, loving one another, and working together with one mind and purpose.

Don’t be selfish; don’t try to impress others.

Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves.

Don’t look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others, too.

You must have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had.

Decide to be more actively involved in building community while serving the kingdom. You were designed for community and even though the community is partial and imperfect at times, enjoy getting to know your team mates.

Yours for His Kingdom,

Cindy Dennis

Yesterday was such a beautiful spring like day. I had my granddaughter Lena over for the weekend and we decided to head outside the house and go to the park to play. You have to know Lena, she is three years old, loves to dress up even to play outside. When we got to the park it was packed full of other children and family members who had the same idea as we did to get out of the house.

Lena was excited to be at the park, but for the longest time she was transfixed to the side watching all the other children. As we watched several children her age going down the toddler slide, she was restless though still not willing to do it herself. Finally, I put Lena on my lap and together we went down the toddler slide. The whole time she kept saying "I am afraid, I can't do this." We quickly reached the bottom and she popped right up and said “Let's go down the slide again. That was fun. This time I want to go all by myself. I can do this.” After that, the park was full of possibilities. I literally had to say it was time, and she did not want to go willingly.

How many times have we allowed fear, worry, and doubt to prevent us from embracing the plans He has for us. God wants us to TRUST HIM and not rely on our own understanding.

“Trust God from the bottom of your heart; don’t try to figure out everything on your own. Listen for God’s voice in everything you do, everywhere you go; He’s the one who will keep you on track.” Proverbs 3:5-6 MSG

God has put tremendous ability, creative power, and potential in each of us. He will lead us down paths where He will not only guide us but equip us along the way, but if we look to the future with fear, our potential and creative power are stifled.

“Happy are those who are strong in the Lord, who want above all else to follow your steps.” Psalm 84:5 TLB

There will always be those who believe they can, and those who believe they can't. We must decide which one we are going to be.

God promises to never leave us or forsake us or relax His hand upon us. He is there to ensure we are set up for success and to prosper along the way.

What are you going to do with yourself this year? Will you just stand on the sidelines and watch everyone else walk out their God-given destiny or will you decide right now that you won't let fear and doubt keep you from trusting God and no longer allow emotions to dictate your decisions.

Get a vision of what God has for you and then begin the journey, one step at a time.

“Commit everything you do to the Lord. Trust him to help you do it, and he will.” Psalm 37:5 TLB
