Motivated by Compassion

My daughter Christal and her husband Andrew just returned from a mission’s trip to Columbia. I admired their willingness to sacrificially give of their time and pay for their expenses to travel to a remote part of Columbia to share the gospel to those who have no running water and so little hope. (you can see the video above about the trip)

Leaving their three young children behind meant coordinating with several individuals to watch them. Their motivation was compassion to help support a mission dream of one of Andrew’s classmates from Liberty University who felt God calling him and his family to reach those in Columbia.

I was at Christal and Andrew’s house watching their children when they returned from Columbia. The smiles on both their faces said it all. Yes they both looked exhausted from the 14 hours of flight travel, yet their hearts overflowed with compassion for the countless lives they touched. Already they both were talking of returning next year.

Over and over, the Gospels tell how Jesus’ heart broke with compassion for people. The Bible says in Mark 6:34 that when Jesus saw the great multitude, He was moved with compassion for them because they were like sheep not having a shepherd. So He began to teach them many things.

Jesus noticed the people’s confusion and neediness. He noticed people who needed healing, both spiritually and physically. Jesus compassion allowed Him to notice the needs of others.

If we are going to be motivated by compassion, we need to “…adopt the mind-set of Jesus the Anointed. Live with His attitude in our hearts.” (Philippians 2:5 VOICE). And “…be kind and compassionate. Graciously forgive one another just as God has forgiven you….” (Ephesians 4:32 VOICE)

If we want to be used by God in any capacity, compassion must be foremost in our minds and hearts—not obligation, not mere duty, not guilt, but a God-given burden for people.

Ask God to help you be compassionate to:

• See the need.

• Feel their pain.

• Get involved—instead of making excuses and doing nothing.

• Extend support and help—using your talents, time and finances.

If we want to be used by God, we must be motivated by compassion.

If you are ready for an adventure, ask God to show you compassionate acts of kindness to try. Then be intentional with these acts of compassion and watch how God works in your heart as well as in the hearts of those lives you touch!

Choose today to live your life motivated by compassion…☻
