CDM NEWSLETTER: "A Thrill of Hope"
For those of you who know me well, you know that cooking is not one of my strengths. Oh, I have
learned to cook a few recipes over the years, and I have certainly had my attempts in trying new recipes.
I remember the first time I cooked a Thanksgiving turkey, Thanksgiving 1980. I did not realize that it
could take a few days to thaw out a frozen turkey in the refrigerator. I also did not realize that you had to pull out the bag of giblets and neck first before you put the bird in the oven. That day the turkey cooked and cooked and cooked and it still was hard and pink in the center. Let’s just say the can of soup tasted wonderful that evening.
That same weekend, I also tried to make homemade coffee cake using an old family recipe. Who knew that a “t” symbol on the recipe card meant teaspoon not tablespoon, when measuring baking powder. About 20 minutes after I put the pan in the oven to bake, we could see smoke coming from the kitchen and could smell something burning in the oven. (This was before fire alarms). Pat, my husband, came to my rescue, “poking” the cake, to let air out, in order to keep the volcano lava eruptions from splattering all over the oven. It was shocking to me how critical it was to get the right measurements.
The damage was done; the oven was a mess with burnt batter that took us hours to scrub clean. (Too bad self- cleaning ovens were not invented yet!)
The Bible says in Matthew 12:34 that “Out of the fullness (the OVERFLOW, the superabundance) of the heart the mouth speaks.” What kind of heart overflow do you have coming out of your mouth? Are your “measurements” (proportions) off? Are your words causing more damage than good?
Psalms 9:1 says “I am thanking God from a FULL heart.” Do you have a THANKFUL heart?
Today I heard our pastor at church say this quote, “Watch your thoughts. They become words. Watch your words. They become deeds. Watch your deeds. They become habits. Watch your habits. They become character. Character is everything.”
Having a thankful heart is a CHOICE. It begins with our thoughts. What kind of thoughts are you
permitting? Philippians 4:8 reminds us to “Think about all you can praise God for and be glad about.” Colossians 3:15 says we are to “cultivate thankfulness.” And Proverbs 4:21 reminds us to “Keep these thoughts ever in mind; let them penetrate deep within your heart.” This Thanksgiving season, take time to have thankful thoughts that will lead to having a thankful heart that overflows with thankful praise to God who day by day, and minute by minute, is so generous in
giving us so many blessings. Consider creating a gratitude journal and write down the many, many blessings of God that overflow into every corner of your life—blessings that can’t be stopped.
And let it remind you to return thanks to God in overflowing, unstoppable THANKFUL praise.
